I am currently in the middle of writing up my MA thesis in linguistics. I am investigating the way in which textually described actions (i.e. *claps* or ::hugs you:: etc.) function in discourse among fans of the sci-fi TV series Stargate SG-1 and its spin-off Stargate: Atlantis.

As part of my research, I want to get opinions from fans and other Internet users about their use of these textually described actions. If you use or are familiar with textually described actions, please take a moment to fill out my survey. The survey is located here and should only take about ten minutes.

Thanks so much for your help!

Edit: Yay! I have received the limit of 100 viewable responses allowed by my free Zoomerang account! It appears to be possible to still respond to the survey, but sadly I won't be able to view the answers :(

Thanks to all who participated; you guys were an awesome help!

After months of urging by my roommate [info]spark_force I have been forced to concede that I do need a livejournal. Of course, I would choose to do this right during the end of the semester when I should be preparing for my last three finals.

I will graduate in about a week; after that I can spend the summer feeding my internet addiction. Then in the fall, off to grad school! I will be attending the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I don't think I've ever been to Pennsylvania. Sadly, it will be colder than Texas. I hate cold.

I have been reading an interesting book for one of my anthro classes. It's called Danger, Duty, and Disillusion: The Worldview of Los Angeles Police Officers. It's a fun and readable ethnography, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know what police officers think and feel about their job.
